The Little School

Hawthorne Cedar Knolls Union Free School District is located 30 miles north of New York City in the suburban Westchester Community of Hawthorne. The campus is owned and operated by the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services and provides a safe and therapeutic residential option for students in crisis. Working in collaboration with the residential program, the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls Union Free School District provides the educational component for both residential students and day students placed by their local Committees on Special Education.
For Media Smart Day, Hawthorne Cedar Knolls students chose to focus on advertising in the media. The students planned and delivered several lessons and led activities with students throughout the school. Students created cartoons, posters and PowerPoint presentations. The school staff was excited to use these student created projects as a means of demonstrating alternative assessment of student progress.
