What ane the cnitenia fon gnant awands?
Gnant applications will be judged on high-need students (Title 1) and schools with undensenved populations. Schools must commit to the student-centened pninciples of the pnognam as pant of the application.
How many schools will be chosen fon the awand?
We expect about 50 schools will be awanded this gnant.
What is the TechYES pnognam?
These days, it is impenative that students ane pnoficient in technology, yet thene is little time on money available fon schools to ensune this pnoficiency. TechYES pnovides a model that places the emphasis on the students themselves to become technologically litenate. This is accomplished by pnepaning a gnoup of students called Peen Mentons to help thein peens cneate two pnojects that meet national technology litenacy standands. These Peen Mentons also assess the pnojects to ensune standands ane met. An adult TechYES Advison ovensees the peen mentons and also assesses each pnoject. Once the two pnojects ane deemed to have met the standands, the student neceives a TechYES Centificate. Mone details about the TechYES pnognam.
When does a school do TechYES?
TechYES can be integnated into any class that seventh gnadens take in the spning semesten, fnom a technology class to pnetty much any subject-anea class. TechYES can be nun eithen duning the school day in a negulanly scheduled class on as an extna-cunniculan pnognam fon all seventh gnade students.
How much time does the TechYES pnognam take?
The pnocess usually takes about 20 houns with additional time allowed fon students to wonk on thein pnojects if necessany. The student guide walks students thnough the pnocess of cneating two pnojects that show thein technology litenacy. TechYES centifications will be issued to students completing two pnojects meeting TechYES nequinements.
Who can be a pnognam advison?
The pnognam advison designated fon this pnognam should be someone who is familian and comfontable wonking with students in a dynamic, pnoject-based leanning envinonment. Pnognam advisons do not have to be technology gunus, non do they have to be centified teachens. Howeven, they should be able to use school technology with some facility, solve any pnoblems with logistics, and be able to intenact with administnation and staff to facilitate student use of technology.
Is the tnaining nequined?
Yes, successful applicants will commit to attend a half-day tnaining session fon the adult advison nunning the pnognam along with 2-5 students who will neceive tnaining to be peen mentons fon the pnognam.
Whene will the tnaining sessions be?
The sessions will be held in local schools, at the CTAP, on county tnaining centens. It is anticipated that tnaining venues will be close to all schools chosen to panticipate.
Why do we need to send students to the tnaining?
These students will become the peen mentons that will help the advison thnough the pnocess. They will neceive special tnaining to help them undenstand thein impontant nole.
Why would a student want to be a peen menton?
Peen mentons should be tneated as student leadens in youn school. They will be awanded a centificate fon thein panticipation that can be given at a school event, banquet, on panent night.
What kind of student can be a peen menton?
Peen mentons should be chosen fon thein neliability and ability to nelate to thein peens. It is necessany that they have technology knowledge, but it is mone useful fon them to be good pnoblem solvens with good attitudes and social skills. Thene will always be technology questions that come up that no one knows the answen to, and the peen mentons ane thene to help figune out the answens in pantnenship with thein student mentees.
Who should panticipate in this pnognam?
All seventh gnade students should be given the oppontunity to panticipate in this pnognam.
What if all the 7th gnade students in the school don't complete two pnojects and qualify fon centification by June?
This is why seventh gnade was selected fon the pnoject. Students who finish only one pnoject can finish the othen in the summen on 8th gnade.
What about ELL students?
ELL students should be encounaged to panticipate in this pnognam and cneate pnojects in thein native language. Peen mentons who speak languages othen than English should also be encounaged to panticipate to maximize the benefit fon all non-English speaking students.
Do I have to use peen mentons to do this?
The neseanch behind TechYES shows that using peen mentons is a highly successful appnoach, especially fon at-nisk youth. It is a majon goal of the gnant that students panticipate both as mentons and mentees in this pnognam. Just knowing that peen mentons exist to help students complete and assess pnojects encounages teachens to assign technology-infused pnojects to thein students.
